Rock Ferry Pinot Gris
Produced in Marlborough. The Pinot Gris variety has gained popularity over the years, with many styles produced. At Rock Ferry we aim for a generous, textured style, full bodied with lower acidity. The structure and framework come from phenolics and alcohol rather than acidity. To carry this we need optimum fruit concentration, and low cropping helps us achieve this. A lot of work is done in the vineyard for this wine. We have a variety of clones and a range of vine age which also helps with this diversity.
We ferment the clones in separate batches and this gives blending options. The older vines give us lower brix with the flavour profile of rich spice and musk, while the newer clones ripen past 24.5 brix and these give us intense flavours in the pear and quince spectrum. The wine is made with minimal intervention, hand harvested, whole bunch pressed, using free run juice only. We use a mixture of cultured yeast and wild yeast, and a mixture of stainless steel barrels and seasoned oak puncheons. The wine is matured on lees for 6 months.
